Yeah, their last conversation really didn't end well, at all. He was angry and tired and frustrated, and Sophie was... being Sophie, he guesses. Is he still hurt from everything that happened there? Maybe, a little. Yeah. But a part of him really doesn't want to keep dwelling on that.
So, he shrugs, though his gaze is turned away from her.]
It's whatever. Everything tends to annoy me at one point, in case you haven't gotten the memo yet.
(Read: she's well-aware of everything that annoys Scott, because she can hear and feel the annoyance. Once again, she thanks everything for not having been a normal teen. Can you imagine.
But she gives his shoulder a little punch before she stretches.)
... Yeah, but you know. Coulda been better myself — this whole mentoring and teaching thing is mum's deal, it's all very new to me. Live and learn, right?
[He's surprised, honestly. Hearing Sophie admit not quite fault, but maybe that she didn't fully handle their last encounter in the best possible way, is still more than what he expected. He just sort of figured that everyone was still going to blame him or at the very least, just tell him to toughen up or deal with shit because everyone is an asshole or whatever.
Not to mention she did warn him that she's not the greatest at this sort of thing.
But. She's really trying, huh? Still trying more than most around here. A sign that she hasn't really given up on him and that's nice.]
...Yeah, live and learn. [He says, relenting. Not outright saying everything is fine, but he's not going to hold it against her.]
Real talk, who cares what everyone thinks? What truly is ever going to matter is what I think, and I think you're okay.
(Listen, nothing better than some narcissistic humor to get them through the night. But, hey, she did tell him she's a bit of a fuck up. A fuck up in terms of a Cuckoo, probably one in terms of a Frost, or not, who knows, she hasn't asked Emma.
[Scott rolls his eyes at that, but there's no hiding the way his mouth twitches upward in amusement. Clearly meant as a joke and Scott's going to take it as such, but he can't deny that a small part of him is kind of pleased hearing this. At least one person hasn't fully given up on him yet. It further eases some of that anger that's been growing inside him.]
We're both doomed.
[But he starts pulling at the headsets that he brought out here, before offering one bud over to her.] Wanna listen to some shit?
Oh, without a doubt. Emma "For The Children" Frost would be facepalming my mentoring attempts.
(But it doesn't seem like Scott minds it too much. He's here, isn't he? She can feel the anger soothe, and that's enough for her. Now, what wicked teenage music will Tykeclops show her, beats her, but she's willing to give it a chance.
[It's the only thing he really says before adjusting his own bud to his ear, fingers soon turning to his walkman and turning the music on. Thankfully, it's not ear piercing loud, but familiar sounds of Metallica start playing through the speakers for Sophie to listen to. Or maybe it's unfamiliar, but either way, Scott has his hands behind his head as he lets himself relax next to her.]
(And he is right; she isn't Emma. Emma just taught her everything she knows, really, but this part, she definitely left out if not for observation on the hivemind's part — and for the longest time? Mad at Emma, for "inspiring Sophie to do foolish, superhero things that led to her death". It was not Emma, mind you. Sophie just has always been... A little more brave. Had some different wants and needs, but sure.
Blame Emma. Probably can't blame Emma now for the way she left the hivemind, but whatever. Instead, she'll gladly take the music, closing her eyes to better enjoy it... And well, since she's in Scott's brain, might as well give him something cool and colorful to look at.)
Look, I'm gonna give you some fireworks.
(And so she does, all colors and arrangements she can think of, so he can enjoy seeing them for now. God knows when she'll do it again.)
[But Scott lets himself enjoy the colors that flash throughout his mind, a loud explosion of colors that he doesn't get to experience anymore. Not normally. Maybe a nice reminder of how colorful the world can be and that it's not just red, not just his anger or whatever. But that's thinking too deeply, so he just lets himself enjoy the images on a surface level as the music continues to play between them.
Although a thought rolls across his mind, a noise leaving Scott as he folds his hands behind his head.]
...Is it my brain that still remembers these colors? Or is it your telepathy making me see this?
But, well, good question. She assumes he doesn't want to hear the tidbits of what she's doing, all the technical bullshit in telepathy that she doesn't even want to explain either. But, two things are correct.)
People see color differently. I'm borrowing from your perception of color, and making your brain think it's seeing what it's seeing. More like a glorified hallucination, really.
[Guess that makes sense, even if 'glorified hallucination' sounds kind of shitty. At least he can actually see again, so Scott's willing to actually be a bit more positive despite that one singular dour thought.
He continues to look up at the blue sky. The white clouds. It feels like it would be a waste not to just take all of this in. Maybe that's the whole purpose of this particular lesson? Who knows.]
...Could you do this for me? Like every so often? [So he doesn't forget how colorful the world can be.]
(He reads as peaceful, and honestly, she's patting herself on the back for it. Maybe she's not that bad at this not-really-parenting-kinda-teacher-but-not-really-maybe-mentor role that she put herself in.
So, an easy smile comes, her fingers fluttering as she adds a shooting star to Scott's sight.)
Oh. Yeah, absolutely. This is like, Telepathy 101, I can do it in my sleep.
[A shooting star... nice little touch. Honestly, he can't remember ever seeing one, besides stuff in movies, so even though it's just another hallucination, it at least feels a little more real than seeing it through motion picture. The only time he'll get to see one in real life is through his normal red lens, but... it's fine. Right now.]
Cool. [Long pause, maybe just waiting for the next song on his cassette to play...]
Hey, thanks Sophie. [Guess all of this really does mean a lot to him? Not just showing him images, but Sophie actually checking on him.]
(This is too nice? It almost feels like she can get through to the kid, because she is. Feels like a win in so many levels, and one she needed. She wasn't expecting to care that much, she thought it would be an analytical, strategic way to get her on the right track, but... Eh, ended up as a genuine mentorship.
It's fine, probably.)
Mhm? Yeah, don't... Don't mention it, you're welcome. I'm happy to be your mentor.
[Not the soft vulnerability of a teenager... but the question does come out in that way, no matter how much Scott would later deny it. While the fact that Sophie is here in the first place speaks volumes, actually hearing her say this, only adds to that feeling that maybe, he can actually fit in with the others.
Or that he's worth something, even now. Even if he's not the version of Scott they all know-- not Cyclops yet.]
Yeah, I mean it, now stop getting mushy, you'll get the idea I have emotions and shit like that. Ew.
(She's half serious. She's a little uncomfortable with emotions, as one is, but she means every word. It's probably one of the scariest things she's done in the superhero realm of it all. Inhaling Kick to stop Quentin's riot, becoming a whole crow in a little apocalypse, inhabiting Laura for the duration of one identical sister shutdown, so forth, so forth, but this is just her and a kid who needs her.
She can't mess up too bad, but she knows she will.)
Shut up, fine. Only listening to music now. [He'll turn up the volume just a bit for that!!
Still not too loud, but Scott's completely satisfied with just lying on the ground for a while longer and letting the lyrics of familiar music play in his ear as he looks up at a (mostly) normal sky. With everything slotting together-- as he finds himself relaxing, he may even feel just a little bit normal for the first time in months.
(He's letting her play, she can play. The fireworks are going to stop for a minute, but her eyes go pink as she flutters her fingers to the beat of the song. A sunrise, he deserves to see one while she's here and willing. It's a breath-taking one, she's putting in lots of effort in the dance of colors and mixes.)
